Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday: Jordan Rhodes battles Chris Basham for the ball

SHEFFIELD UNITED VS SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY LIVE UPDATES – Express Sport brings you all the action from the Steel City derby.

Sheffield United 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

39: CHANCE! Sheffield Wednesday win the ball in midfield and counter-attack at pace, Lucas Joao plays Ross Wallace into space in the box but he screws the ball wide.

38: Lucas Joao is proving a handful for Sheffield United’s defence. He picks up the ball on the edge of the box, works a bit of space and fires at goal but his daisy-cutter effort drifts harmlessly wide.

30: Jos Luhukay will be relatively pleased with his side’s opening 30 minutes. They look well organised in defence and have blunted the Blades’ attack. However, Sheffield Wednesday do appear to be lacking a cutting edge up-front. Can they improve their supply to Jordan Rhodes and Lucas Joao?

29: Lucas Joao shoots just over the bar… but it’s probably the tamest effort of all-time. The Sheffield Wednesday striker turns away from his marker with a neat bit of skill but then attempts to lob Sheffield United keeper Simon Moore with a weak chip.

24: BOOKING! Mark Duffy plays in Clayton Donaldson down the wing but Sheffield Wednesday defender Glenn Loovens slides through the back of the Sheffield United striker to earn a yellow card.

18: A half-chance for Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes. Liam Palmer pings a cross into the box, Rhodes does well to get his head on it but the ball flashes wide.

14: A nice one-two plays in Sheffleld United wing-back Enda Stevens on the left-hand side of the box, he fizzes the ball across but it drifts harmlessly clear of danger.

8: Sheffield Wednesday’s first foray into United’s half. Morgan Fox whips a cross into the box, Liam Palmer picks up the ball but his shot is deflect wide. The resulting corner comes to nothing.

3: CLOSE! Well, kind of. John Lundstram volleys over from a corner. It was never going on target but it’s a start from United.

1: We’re underway here at Bramall Lane. Wednesday in their home kit so it’s red vs blue tonight. Always nice to see.

Two minutes to kick off

19:43: The players are out at a packed Bramall Lane. The atmosphere is fizzing. It’s a crisp, cold night in South Yorkshire. Let the battle commence!

Luhukay on the derby

19:30: Sheffield United triumphed 4-2 at Hillsborough in September – a standout result amid a woeful season for the Owls.

Dos Luhukay is determined to use the derby as a building block and, discussing the reverse fixture, he said: “It’s in the past, but I have looked at the game and seen a couple of things we must do better, so I hope we can [on Friday].

“We need a to win a game because it’s been a long time without one. It would give us more confidence for the games we have coming up.

“When the results are not positive, the confidence is not very high. So we have been working hard to give the team tools and to make sure we have a good feeling [in the squad].”

Steel City derby prediction

19:15: Sky Sports’ Championship expert David Prutton believes we’re in for a thrilling 90 minutes at Bramall Lane.

“A new era begins for Sheffield Wednesday under Jos Luhukay, and what a place it is for him to start,” he said.

“If he didn’t know what the Steel City derby was about already, he will by the end of Friday night.

“It’s a real baptism of fire for him.

“The first game between these two at Hillsborough was one of the games of the season in the Championship and, once again, this is a tough one to call.

“I’m going to have to go for an entertaining draw.

“2-2 with Leon Clarke to score first.”

Sheffield United loanee James Wilson is on the bench

18:30: Good evening and welcome to Express Sport’s live coverage of the Steel City derby between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday.

It looks set to be a corker of a Championship clash between the bitter rivals.

Let’s start with the Owls. They have a new manager in the dugout – Dutchman Jos Luhukay.

The Bundesliga promotion expert has no experience of English football but is aware of the importance of this game to the fans.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Luhukay said: “It’s important for the team and for the players to have a good feeling after the game.

“Derbies are highlights in a season, they are not normal games.”

United also have some new faces on show.

Chris Wilder strengthened his squad this week with the captures of James Wilson from Manchester United, Ryan Leonard from Southend and Lee Evans from Wolves.

They are unlikely to start but will be desperate to make an impact if they do get on the pitch.

We will have team news in half an hour while kick off is 75 minutes away.
