Manchester United started the season brightly but have since fallen eight points behind league leaders and rivals Manchester City.
Paul Pogba’s injury lay-off has been cited as a reason for the Red Devils’ dip in form, with his absence having a knock-on effect on other players.
And according to The Independent, Jose Mourinho is looking to address this issue with the addition of Carlos Soler in January.
The Valencia winger is said to have caught Mourinho’s eye after he missed out on other attacking targets in the summer.
The Independent claim the United boss is still frustrated by the failed Ivan Perisic deal and sees Soler as a viable alternative.
The 20-year-old is a versatile attacking player, predominantly operating on the right wing but also on the left and in a central role.
He is said to be Mourinho’s No 1 target in the January transfer window but the Portuguese could be constrained by a lack of available funds.
United will reportedly not allow a huge spend this winter and have tightened the purse strings.
As a result, the Red Devils have reportedly considered a swap deal involving a reduced transfer fee plus Andreas Pereira – who is already on loan with Valencia and happy at the club.
The Spanish side are said to be keen to hold onto Soler and will command a fee in the region of £40million.
However, they still have financial problems with losses in the region of £65m so could find it difficult to turn down a good offer.
Soler has made 12 appearances this season in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing four assists, and is under contract until June 2021.
